Tarayá Project: Protecting the Amazon and Empowering Indigenous Communities
The Tarayá Project is a remarkable initiative dedicated to preserving the Amazon rainforest and strengthening the socio-economic and territorial sovereignty of the Huni Kuin people, located in Jordão, Acre. This project represents a vital effort to protect one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet while fostering sustainable development for its Indigenous communities.
Led by the German association Living Gaia e.V., the Tarayá Project focuses on safeguarding approximately 16,000 hectares of pristine rainforest. The initiative includes the implementation of bioeconomic activities and the creation of a protective corridor for uncontacted Indigenous groups.
The project is financed by donations from European families who are deeply committed to environmental conservation and the well-being of Indigenous communities.
My Role
As the Advisor to Living Gaia for operations in Brazil, I contribute to the Tarayá Project in three key areas:
Financial Management: I oversee the efficient allocation of financial resources, ensuring that donations are utilized transparently and effectively for conservation efforts and community development activities.
Project Development: I collaborate on the design and execution of strategies that align the needs of the Huni Kuin community with the project’s environmental preservation goals. Together, we promote sustainable initiatives that benefit both the local population and the ecosystem.
Networking and Partnerships: Leveraging my professional network, I help establish strategic partnerships that amplify the project's impact and ensure its long-term success. My efforts focus on securing funding, fostering collaborations, and connecting the right stakeholders to support this vital cause.
A Vision for the Future
The Tarayá Project is more than a conservation initiative—it’s a pathway to sustainable autonomy for the Huni Kuin people. By empowering this Indigenous community and preserving the rainforest, the project not only protects biodiversity but also safeguards cultural heritage for generations to come.
It is an honor to be part of this transformative work, contributing to a future where people and nature coexist in harmony.
